“Fake it ‘til you make it” is an approach that may work in many fields, but even the most experienced sales coaches know that it just doesn’t work in sales. 

There isn’t a time when you’re not interacting with people in sales, so your attitude has a significant impact and plays a crucial role in your success. Quite simply, being a salesperson starts with having a positive outlook.

You may have heard of sales coaches saying the way you look at the world around you directly impacts your mood, work ethic, and how well you achieve sales results. And it’s true – the attitude you choose, both internally and externally, is the basis for all your interactions. Whether you’re interacting with the team or engaging with prospects, a positive mindset will draw people in. Having a positive attitude encourages people to continue working with you and trust you. This is another major part that makes up the foundation of success.

What is your attitude like? How do people perceive your attitude? Do they enjoy spending time with you, or do they avoid it? Are you optimistic or pessimistic? Do you bring good energy and enthusiasm to the conversation? According to our sales coaches, it’s helpful to reflect on questions like these, as it could provide valuable insight into whether your attitude is good or not.

Remember that your mindset is made up of your attitude, emotions, beliefs and behaviours. These can be incredibly powerful tools for your success, but if they are misused, they can just as equally hold you back.

From your level of self-motivation and desire to how you perceive sales as an actual career instead of just another job affects how you view yourself, your company, the products you’re selling, your customers, prospects, and how you approach key sales activities. It even influences how you manage your sales pipeline, respond to your manager, meet sales targets, and how you handle ownership of your personal goals and responsibilities.

Good sales coaches will always remind you that your background doesn’t have to determine where you end up. What matters more is your mindset and the choices you made that have led you to this point. Every thought shapes your reality, propelling you either forward or holding you back. Are you going to succeed or will you stumble? Are you sabotaging your own success, or are you finally willing to reach your true potential?

Your attitude and your mindset are two of the biggest factors that determine your success. Take a moment to reflect on that. Are you heading in the right direction or are you stuck in  a rut?
